#Moving Boldly with Queensland Ballet

The launch of Queensland Ballet’s 2013 website was a defining moment for Bigfish. We’d consolidated three existing sites into one seamless experience, earning a Webby Award nomination and helping to drive consecutive sold-out seasons for the company.

In our six years as the company's Digital Partner, we have created digital experiences, campaigns and content designed to nurture the artform and support the brand's burgeoning growth. The latest result of this partnership is Queensland Ballet's 2019 website – a platform that transcends its predecessor and brings the company's artistic vision to the fore.

#Colour and Scale

A bold use of colour draws attention to each QB19 production, emphasising its individuality while maintaining its connection with the season. Colours from the 2019 season palette were used to “theme” each ballet, complementing each production’s distinct aesthetic. These were used across menus, titles and buttons, creating a simple-yet-striking effect that weaves the brand through every page. 

As the Queensland Ballet has many audiences, content needed to be intuitively structured and easy to find. The UX ensures wayfinding is beautifully simple, incorporating a side navigation bar that outlines different sections clearly. 

#Motion at Every Turn

Ballet encapsulates the beauty of movement: our aspiration was for the website to do the same. Full-screen motion is placed front and centre, bringing QB19 to life on a digital stage. The minimal layout gives this movement the space to breathe. Video performs beautifully on both desktop and mobile, without compromising speed or usability. 

#A Powerfully Flexible Platform

Advances to our Tank publishing platform have allowed the Bigfish team to take designs and ideas to the next level. With different levels of admin, Tank gives not only our designers but the Queensland Ballet team a collection of branded components that they can use to build out new web pages. This is ideal for Queensland Ballet's many facets, and their ever-growing focus on community connection. To drive purchases and maximise engagement, Tank seamlessly integrates with Queensland Ballet's purchasing platform via Tessitura.

It was essential that the web experience was accessible and inclusive, and careful consideration was given to colours, contrast ratios and sizing of elements. The site adheres to WGAC 2.0 AA and can be interpreted by screen readers and other assistive technologies.
